The best dress watches

A dress watch is defined by what it leaves out: no rotating bezel, no chunky crown guards, no busy dial. It is thin enough to slide under a shirt cuff and small enough to stay there, which in practice means about 34 to 40 mm and, ideally, under about 12 mm thick.

Size matters more here than anywhere: an oversized dress watch looks wrong in a way an oversized sports watch doesn't. Measure your wrist first and stay in or below your range.

FAQ

What size should a dress watch be?

Smaller than your everyday watch: usually 34 to 40 mm and, ideally, under about 12 mm thick, so it slides under a shirt cuff. Stay at the lower end of your wrist's range.

Leather strap or metal bracelet for a dress watch?

Leather is the classic, in black or dark brown to match your shoes and belt. A slim metal bracelet works too; a chunky sports bracelet does not.

Can I wear a dress watch every day?

Yes, if it has some water resistance and you avoid knocks. Many people wear one daily; just take it off for sport and swimming.
